HAI-SUI-YU

BIOGRAPHY:

Professor Hai-Sui Yu is the foundation Professor of Geotechnical Engineering and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham . The Faculty of Engineering at Nottingham is ranked as one of the top five engineering faculties in the UK by the latest UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008). Professor Yu was also formerly Head of the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham. As founding Director of the Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics (NCG), he has rapidly established NCG as one of the largest and most active geotechnical groups in the UK with nearly 40 staff and research students. Prior to joining Nottingham in early 2001, he was Assistant Dean of Engineering (Research) at the University of Newcastle in Australia. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in Rock Mechanics from Imperial College in 1987, and D.Phil. in Soil Mechanics from the University of Oxford in 1990. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to theoretical geomechanics, Professor Yu was awarded a higher doctorate (D.Sc.) in 2000 by the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Professor Yu’s main research contributions have been on analytical and computational geomechanics, plasticity and constitutive modelling, in-situ soil testing for geotechnical site characterization, and transportation geotechnics. He has produced over 220 publications including 2 sole-authored research monographs and over 90 refereed papers in leading international journals such as Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Geotechnique, International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, and ASCE Journals . He has been awarded many international medals and prizes for his research work, which include the Chandra Desai Medal of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics in 2008, the first James K Mitchell Lecture of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in 2004, Shamsher Prakash Foundation’s Research Award in 2003, Institution of Civil Engineers’ highest research paper award, the Telford Medal, in 2000, and Australian Geomechanics Society’s Trollope Medal in 1998.

Professor Yu is very active in professional activities and services and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Geomechanics amd Geoengineering , a Co-Editor of Acta Geotechnica , and an Associate Editor of Canadian Geotechnical Journal . He also serves on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and International Journal of Geomechanics of American Society of Civil Engineers. Professor Yu was on the National Executive Committee of the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) from 2002-2005. He serves on TC3 and TC16 of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and is also a Board Member of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG). Over the past two decades, Professor Yu has worked for various periods with many of the leading geotechnical research groups in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, France, Austria and the UK
