PROF. DEEPANKAR CHOUDHURY, Humboldt Fellow, JSPS Fellow, BOYSCAST Fellow, TWAS-VS Fellow, FIGS, FISET is currently a full Professor at Department of Civil Engineering of IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India and an Adjunct Professor at Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), New Delhi, India and connected to CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, India. He had completed B.E. (Civil Engg.) in 1997 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata with GOLD Medal as 1st Class 1st Honours Rank holder in Civil Engineering and 2nd in the entire University among all branches of Engineering. After having industrial experience for one year as Graduate Design Engineer at Development Consultants Limited (DCL), Kolkata, he had joined for M.E. in Civil Geotechnical Engineering at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He had completed M.E. in 2000 with GOLD Medal and Senate Commendation from IISc Bangalore as 1st Class 1st with Distinction in Civil Engineering department and 1st Rank in the entire institute in Engineering. Dr. Choudhury had completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in the area of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in 2002 from IISc, Bangalore and received Best Ph.D. Thesis Award (Prof. G.A. Leonard’s Award) in India among all Indian Institutes and Universities for calendar years 2001 and 2002 from Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), New Delhi. Soon after completion of Ph.D., Dr. Choudhury was absorbed as a Lecturer in Department of Civil Engineering of IIT Kanpur in November 2002, from where he has moved to IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor in July 2003. At IIT Bombay, he has been promoted to Associate Professor in April 2007, and further to the position of Professor in June 2012, for his remarkable contributions in research, teaching and development activities. He also mentored new IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India during 2009 as an Associate Professor (on deputation) from IIT Bombay.
DR. DEEPANKAR CHOUDHURY has made significant contribution in the area of research, teaching and research development in the field of ‘Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering’. Simple and practical design theories, principles and charts have been proposed by him for the earthquake resistant design of geotechnical structures like retaining wall, foundations, anchors, piles, slopes, landfills, waterfront retaining structures, reinforced soil-structures, combined pile-raft foundation (CPRF) etc. He is the pioneer in proposing and to make wide applications of pseudo-dynamic approach for the earthquake resistant design of geotechnical structures. He has already authored/co-authored about total 250 technical papers among which about 150 are in referred journals and about 100 in conferences. He has already supervised 17 PhD theses. He has developed and started two new courses on ‘Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering’ for both UG and PG level students at IIT Bombay and also conducted several short-term training courses for college teachers and practicing engineers in the area of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. His NPTEL Video lectures on “Soil Dynamics” and “Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering”, which are freely available in YouTube are extremely popular across the globe. Also his NPTEL web course on ‘”Foundation Engineering” received several views across the globe and all these courses made significant impact of distance education in India and abroad. His all sponsored research projects are showing the application of research development in the area of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. Recently in 2013 Dr. Choudhury has published with Prof. Rolf Katzenbach of Germany as joint Editors the first ever printed International design guideline for “Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF)” through International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). Also Prof. Choudhury has written a first ever text book titled “Foundation Systems for High-Rise Structures” published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, UK in 2016 with Prof. Rolf Katzenbach and Mr. Steffen Leppla of Germany.
In India, Prof. Choudhury has received almost all possible Young Scientist/Engineer Awards from National Professional Societies/Academies like INSA, INAE, ISCA, NASI, IEI, DAE, DST etc. He has also received various International Awards like Best journal paper award published in ASCE, regional excellent researcher award from IACMAG, USA, Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (experienced category) of Germany, JSPS Fellowship of Japan, BOYSCAST Fellowship of India, TWAS Visiting Scholar Fellowship from The World Academy of Sciences, Italy, APACM Young Investigator Award from Australia, Outstanding Reviewer Award from ASCE etc. He served as Visiting Professor/Scholar/Fellow/Scientist at UC Berkeley, USA; University of Wollongong, Australia; National University of Singapore; Kagoshima University, Japan; Technical University Darmstadt, Germany. He is Editorial Board Member of various prestigious journals like “Canadian Geotechnical Journal”, “ASCE International Journal of Geomechanics”, “Indian Geotechnical Journal”, “INAE Letters” etc. and reviewer of several journal papers. Dr. Choudhury is the fellow/member of several national and international professional societies like ASCE, ISSMGE, GEER, GI-ASCE, IGS, ISET, ISTE, ISCA, IndACM, NASI, IEI and he acted as expert member for several academic and administrative works. He is currently working as Honorary Secretary of ISSMGE Technical Committee TC 207 on Soil-structure interaction and retaining walls, former Secretary and present member of TC 212 on Deep foundations, member of TC 203 on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. He is a member of International Building Code (IBC) committee of USA for IBC 1803 on foundations and member of various committees of Geo-Institute ASCE. Dr. Choudhury received support from his former Professors of IISc and Jadavpur University, colleagues of IIT Bombay and main backbone which is the research group of his current and former M.Tech. and Ph.D. students at IIT Bombay. Dr. Choudhury is blessed by his parents Mrs. Dipali Choudhury and Mr. Bhabatosh Choudhury. Also Dr. Choudhury receives continuous moral supports from his wife Mrs. Nilanjana Choudhury and two kids, son Master Abhroneel Choudhury and daughter Miss Diyanjana Choudhury.
